Competitiveness

Even though WoodRoll® is a unique and breakthrough gasification technology that has a number of advantages competition exists. The competition can be divided into three different main categories:

Fossil energy such as coal, oil and natural gas are from a technical perspective excellent fuels having high energy density, proven and stable quality and available through a built-up infrastructure. But. The use of fossil energy cause climate change!

WoodRoll® is a renewable energy solution that has no negative climate impact. Focus is on projects where renewable is required. Therefore WoodRoll® does not compete directly with fossil energy.

Other renewable energy solutions are mainly power generation technologies such as wind, solar, hydro and biomass power technologies. Hydro power capacity is much larger and less relevant from a competitive perspective.

In contrast to wind and solar Woodroll® is not dependent on the weather. With WoodRol® power can be generated independent of weather and at actual demand. WoodRoll® can be used as both base and balance power to keep the grid stable and thereby facilitate more access for weather dependent renewables into the power grid.

When biomass is incinerated in a traditional steam boiler to generate power the yield biomass to power is significant lower. Power from a gas engine that runs on gas from WoodRoll® has 40–50% higher yield.

There are two main concepts for turning biomass into gas: anaerobic digestion and thermal gasification, WoodRoll® belong to the latter concept.

Anaerobic digestion is a slow process requiring large volumes and therefore have limited scale effects to fit into industrial applications. Anaerobic digestion fits well with wet feedstock such as food waste, wet manure and sludge. It has a low efficiency and produce a high amount of byproduct that can be used as fertilizer. Anaerobic digestion fits well when there is a need of such byproduct and access to wet feedstock. Anaerobic digestion and thermal gasification require different project prerequisites for e.g. feedstock and does therefore seldom compete with each other’s.

State of the art mid-size thermal biomass gasification are characterized by several weaknesses which prevents them from being adequate alternatives to replace fossil energy. State of the art gasification are: designed for a specific feedstock, produce a tar contaminated and diluted gas with a low heating value. The produced gas needs to be cleaned before it can be used, the cleaning is expensive and reduce the yield. WoodRoll® address all these weaknesses. A comparison between WoodRoll® and state of the art gasification technologies looks like:
